Roger Mellor Makins, 1st Baron Sherfield was born on 3 February 1904.2 He was the son of Sir Ernest Makins and Maria Florence Mellor.2,3 He married Alice Brooks Davis, daughter of Hon. Dwight Filley Davis, on 30 April 1934.2 He died on 9 November 1996 at age 92.2
He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.2 He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.2 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1927 entitled to practise as a barrister.2 He was with the Diplomatic Service between 1928 and 1960.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1944.2 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1949.2 He held the office of Ambassador to the U.S.A. between 1952 and 1956.2 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1953.2 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) in 1955.2 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1960.2 He was chairman of UKAEA between 1960 and 1964.2 He was created 1st Baron Sherfield, of Sherfield-on-Loddon, co. Southampton [U.K., 1964] on 29 June 1964.2 He edited the book Economic and Social Consequences of Nuclear Energy, published 1972.2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Hampshire in 1978.2 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1986.2

Christopher James Makins, 2nd Baron Sherfield was born on 23 July 1942.1 He was the son of Roger Mellor Makins, 1st Baron Sherfield and Alice Brooks Davis.1 He married Wendy Catherine Whitney, daughter of John Sargent Whitney, on 26 July 1975.1 He died on 26 January 2006 at age 63.2
