He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Hume, of Polwarth [S., 1625] in April 1648.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Berwickshire between 1669 and 1674.1 Between 1675 and 1679 he was held in custody twice by reason of his hostility to the Government and would have been taken a third time for suspected involvement in the Rye House Plot of 1683 but that he went into hiding and ultimately fled to the Low Countries; he returned and again was obliged to go into hiding for his part in Argyll's rising on behalf of the Duke of Monmouth and a Protestant succession in 1685, hence his titles forfeit, though they were restored to him in 1690 on his having returned to British shores again in the train of HM William III after having spent the time since his being wanted in Ireland, France, Geneva and Holland.1 They also had other issue.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) (Scotland) in 1690.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Berwickshire in 1689/90.1 He was created 1st Lord Polwarth [Scotland] on 26 December 1690, with special remainder to the heirs male of his body and the heirs of those heirs.1 He held the office of Lord Chancellor of Scotland between 1696 and 1702.1 He was created 1st Viscount Blasonberrie [Scotland] on 23 April 1697.1 He was created 1st Lord Polwarth of Polwarth, Rebraes and Greenlaw [Scotland] on 23 April 1697, with special remainder to his heirs male whatsoever.1 He was created 1st Earl of Marchmont [Scotland] on 23 April 1697.1
