He was the son of Jean I d'Avesnes, Comte de Hainault and Aleida van Hollant.2 He married Philippine von Luxemburg, daughter of Hendrik II 'de Blonde' van Limburg Graf von Luxemburg and Marguerite de Bar le Duc. He died on 11 September 1304 at Valenciennes, France.3
