Sir John Thynne was the son of Thomas Thynne and Margaret Eynes.1 He married, firstly, Christian Gresham, daughter of Sir Richard Gresham and Audrey Lynne.1 He married, secondly, Dorothy Wroughton, daughter of Sir William Wroughton.1 He died on 21 May 1580.1
He held the office of Secretary to Protector Somerset in 1547, in the campaign against the Scots.1 He was appointed Knight in 1547.1 He fought in the Battle of Pinkie on 10 September 1547.1 Between January 1567 and 1579 he constructed Longleat.1
He also had four other sons and a daughter.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.2
