William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling was born circa 1567.2 He was the son of Alexander Alexander of Menstrie.3 He married Janet Erskine, daughter of Sir William Erskine, on 3 January 1601.3 He died between 12 December 1639 and 1640.
On 10 September 1621 he received a grant of the vast territory of Nova Scotia, with permission to divide it into 100 tracks of 16,000 acres for colonisation. The grant came with the rank of Baronet, but was not acted until confirmed by King Charles I on 12 Jul 1625.2 He was created 1st Baronet Alexander, of Menstre, in Logie, co. Clackmannan [Nova Scotia] on 12 July 1625.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)
