     John Hope was born on 23 September 1707 at Monimail, Fife, Scotland.2 He was the son of Sir Thomas Hope of Craighall, 8th Bt. and Margaret Lowis.3 He married Isabel Bannerman, daughter of Sir Alexander Bannerman of Elsick, 2nd Bt. and Isabella Macdonald.1
     He lived at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1

     Elizabeth Macdowall was born in April 1742.2 She was the daughter of Colonel William Macdowall, 1st of Castlesemple and Isabella Wallace.3 She married Sir Archibald Hope of Craighall, 9th Bt., son of Archibald Hope and Catherine Tod, in 1757.1 She died on 12 October 1778 at age 36.1
     From 1757, her married name became Hope.
