General Sir James Archibald Hope was born on 14 April 1786.2 He was the son of Colonel Erskine Hope.3 He married Christiana Elizabeth (?)1,2 He died on 30 December 1871 at age 85.1
He was commissioned in 1805, in the service of the 9th Regiment Hanover.1 He fought in the Walcheren Expedition in 1809.1 He fought in the Peninsular War between 1811 and 1813.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1813.2 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1841.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1851.2 He gained the rank of General in 1859.2
