Sir Robert Montgomery was born on 2 December 1809.2 He is the son of Reverend Samuel Law Montgomery and Susanna Maria McClintock.2 He married, firstly, Frances Mary Thomason, daughter of Reverend T. T. Thomason, on 17 December 1834 at Mahomedabad Azinghur, Pakistan.3 He married, secondly, Ellen Jane Lambert on 2 May 1845.2 He died on 28 December 1887 at age 78.2
He took control of Lahore in the Indian Mutiny, for which he was knighted and received the thanks of Parliament.2 He held the office of Member, Council of India.2 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1859.2 He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab between 1859 and 1865.2 He was appointed Knight Grand Commander, Order of the Star of India (G.C.S.I.) in 1866.2
