     He lived at Oak Lea, Furness Abbey, Lancashire, England.⁴

     Lt.-Col. James Crofton was born in May 1826.¹ He was the son of Captain Morgan Crofton and Helen Elizabeth O'Hara.² He married, firstly, Mary Susan Montgomery, daughter of Sir Robert Montgomery and Frances Mary Thomason, on 1 March 1858 at Lahore, Pakistan.^1,3 He married, secondly, Clara Elizabeth Lake, daughter of Captain Edward Lake and Clara Johnston, on 5 March 1867 at Lahore, Pakistan.^1,3 He died on 22 November 1908 at age 82.¹
     He was educated at Honourable East India Company College, Addiscombe, London, England^G.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Engineers.¹ He lived at Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England^G.¹
