     Field Marshal Willliam Gustavus Nicholson, 1st and last Baron Nicholson was born on 2 March 1845.1 He was the son of William Nichol Nicholson and Martha Rhodes.1 He married Victoire M. U. Dillon, daughter of D. Dillon, in 1871.1 He died on 13 September 1918 at age 73.1
     He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1865 in the Royal Engineers.1 He fought in the Punjab Campaign in 1872.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1878.1 He fought in the Afghan War between 1878 and 1880, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He gained the rank of Brevet Major in 1881.1 He fought in the Egyptian Campaign in 1882.1 He gained the rank of Burma Expedition between 1886 and 1887 in the where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He gained the rank of Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in 1887.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1891.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1891.1 He was Chief Engineer in India in 1894.1 He fought in the Tirah Expedition between 1897 and 1898, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1898.1 He was Adjutant General in India between 1898 and 1899.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1899.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1900, where he was mentioned in despatches twice.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1901.1 He was Chief Military Attaché with the Japanese Army in Manchuria.1 He was awarded the Japanese War Medal.1 He was awarded the Cordon of the Rising Sun of Japan.1 He gained the rank of General in 1906.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1908.1 He held the office of Chief of the Imperial Defence Staff between 1908 and 1912.1 He was appointed Knight of Justice, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.J.St.J.)1 He gained the rank of Field Marshal in 1911.1 He was created 1st Baron Nicholson, of Roundhay, co. York [U.K.] on 11 July 1912.1 On his death, his title became extinct.1

     William Nichol Nicholson was born on 12 December 1803.1 He was the son of Thomas Phillips and Mary Nicholson.1 He married Martha Rhodes, daughter of Abram Rhodes, on 2 October 1827.1 He died in 1868.2
     He was given the name of William Nichol Phillips at birth.1 He graduated from Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 On 13 October 1827 his name was legally changed to William Nichol Nicholson by Royal Licence.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for the West Riding, Yorkshire.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of the West Riding, Yorkshire.1
