     Penelope Swift was born after 1612.¹ She was the daughter of Sir Robert Swift and Ursula Barnham.^2,1 She married William Crichton, 2nd Earl of Dumfries, son of William Crichton, 1st Earl of Dumfries and Euphemia Seton, on 29 August 1618.²
     From 29 August 1618, her married name became Crichton.

     Sir Robert Swift was baptised on 5 December 1568 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, England^G.² He married, firstly, Bridget Hastings, daughter of Sir Francis Hastings and Jane Restwold.² He married, secondly, Ursula Barnham, daughter of Stephen Barnham, before 1606.³ He died on 14 March 1625 at age 56.¹ He died intestate and his estate was administered on 16 January 1628.²
     He held the office of High Sheriff of Yorkshire from 1599 to 1600.² He lived at Rotherham, Yorkshire, England^G.¹

     William Crichton, 1st Earl of Dumfries was born circa 1578. He was the son of William Crichton and Katherine Carmichael.² He married, firstly, Euphemia Seton, daughter of James Seton, 5th of Touch and Jean Edmonstone.² He married, secondly, Ursula Barnham, daughter of Stephen Barnham, before 16 July 1630.² He died from 15 August 1642 to 24 March 1642/43.²
     He succeeded as the 9th Lord Crichton of Sanquhar [S., 1488] on 29 June 1612.² He was created 1st Lord of Sanquhar [Scotland] on 2 February 1622.¹ He was created 1st Viscount of Air [Scotland] on 2 February 1622.¹ He was created 1st Lord Crichton of Sanquhar and Cumnock [Scotland] on 12 June 1633, with a special remainder to his male heirs bearing the name Crichton.³ He was created 1st Earl of Dumfries [Scotland] on 12 June 1633, with a special remainder to his male heirs bearing the name Crichton.³ He was created 1st Viscount of Air [Scotland] on 12 June 1633, with a special remainder to his male heirs bearing the name Crichton.²

     Euphemia Seton was the daughter of James Seton, 5th of Touch and Jean Edmonstone.^1,2 She married, secondly, William Crichton, 1st Earl of Dumfries, son of William Crichton and Katherine Carmichael.¹ She married, firstly, Patrick Hamilton of Peel of Livingston.¹ She died in 1617.²
     Her married name became Hamilton.¹ Her married name became Crichton.

     John Somerville, 3rd of Cambusnethan was born in 1520.¹ He was the son of Sir John Somerville, 2nd of Cambusnethan and Lady Margaret Graham.¹ He married Elizabeth Carmichael.¹ He married Katherine Murray, daughter of Patrick Murray of Falahill and Margaret Fleming.¹ He died in February 1594.¹

     Charles Crichton, Lord Crichton was born after 1641. He was the son of William Crichton, 2nd Earl of Dumfries and Penelope Swift.¹ He married Sarah Dalrymple, daughter of James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount of Stair and Margaret Ross, circa 1679.¹ He died from 4 October 1686 to 11 March 1689/90.¹
     He was styled as Lord Crichton.¹ In 1686 he settled his estates, failing sons and heir male issue, on his four daughters successively.¹

     Sarah Dalrymple is the daughter of James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount of Stair and Margaret Ross.^1,2 She married Charles Crichton, Lord Crichton, son of William Crichton, 2nd Earl of Dumfries and Penelope Swift, circa 1679.¹
     Her married name became Crichton.

     James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount of Stair was born in May 1619 at Drummurchie, Ayrshire, Scotland^G.¹ He was the son of James Dalrymple of Stair and Drummurchie and Janet Kennedy.¹ He married Margaret Ross, daughter of Major James Ross of Balneil and Sara Syme, on 21 September 1643.² He died on 25 November 1695 at age 76 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.³
     He held the office of Commissioner for the Administration of Justice in 1657.² He was styled as Lord Stair [Scottish Law Lord] on 13 February 1661.² He held the office of Lord of Session on 13 February 1661.² He was created 1st Baronet Dalrymple, of Stair [Nova Scotia] on 2 June 1664.² He held the office of President of the Court of Session between 1672 and 1681.² In 1682 he retired to Holland after refusing to take the Test.² In 1688 he returned with King William III, and was restored as President of the Court of Session.² He was created 1st Viscount of Stair [Scotland] on 21 April 1690.² He was created 1st Lord Glenluce and Stranraer [Scotland] on 21 April 1690.² He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.³
     

     Lady Anne Gordon was born on 17 January 1709.² She was the daughter of William Gordon, 2nd Earl of Aberdeen and Lady Mary Leslie.¹ She was baptised on 26 January 1709 at Methlick, Aberdeenshire, Scotland^G.² She married William Dalrymple-Crichton, 5th Earl of Dumfries, son of Colonel Hon. William Dalrymple of Glenmure and Penelope Crichton, Countess of Dumfries, on 2 April 1731.³ She died on 15 April 1755 at age 46 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G, without surviving issue.^1,2
     From 2 April 1731, her married name became Dalrymple-Crichton.³

     William Dalrymple-Crichton, 5th Earl of Dumfries was the son of Colonel Hon. William Dalrymple of Glenmure and Penelope Crichton, Countess of Dumfries.¹ He married, firstly, Lady Anne Gordon, daughter of William Gordon, 2nd Earl of Aberdeen and Lady Mary Leslie, on 2 April 1731.¹ He married, secondly, Anne Duff, daughter of William Duff of Crombie and Elizabeth Dalrymple, on 19 June 1762.¹ He died on 27 July 1768, without surviving issue.²
