     Hugh d'Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester was born circa 1047.² He was the son of Richard le Goz, Vicomte d'Avranches and Emma de Contville.¹ He married Ermentrude de Clermont, daughter of Hugues, Comte de Clermont and Marguerite de Roucy, in 1093.^2,3 He died on 27 July 1101 at St. Werburg's, Chester, Cheshire, England^G.² He was buried at St. Werburg's, Chester, Cheshire, England^G.⁴
     Hugh d'Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester also went by the nick-name of Hugh 'le Gros'.¹ In 1066 he contributed 60 ships to the invasion of England, but did not fight at the Battle of Hastings.^2,5 He was created 1st Earl of Chester [England] in 1071.¹ He succeeded as the Vicomte d'Avranches after 1082.² He founded the Abbey of St. Sever in Normandy and St. Werburg at Chester.² On 23 July 1101 a monk.²

     Florence Hyacinthe Chetwode was born on 11 December 1876.¹ She was the daughter of Lt.-Col. Sir George Chetwode, 6th Bt. and Alice Jane Bass.² She married General Sir James Frederick Noel Birch, son of Major R. E. Birch, on 21 October 1903.¹ She died on 4 October 1938 at age 61, leaving issue.¹
     From 21 October 1903, her married name became Birch.

     Major R. E. Birch lived at St. Asaph, Denbighshire, Wales^G, St Asaph.¹

     General Sir James Frederick Noel Birch was the son of Major R. E. Birch.³ He married Florence Hyacinthe Chetwode, daughter of Lt.-Col. Sir George Chetwode, 6th Bt. and Alice Jane Bass, on 21 October 1903.¹ He died on 3 February 1939.¹
     He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.)¹ He gained the rank of General in the Royal Horse Artillery.¹ He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire (G.B.E.)¹ He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.)¹ He lived at 11 Kensington Gardens, Kensington, London, England^G.¹

     Ethel Marie Sumner Ryan was the daughter of Maj.-Gen. Sir Charles Snodgrass Ryan and Alice Alfrida Sumner.^1,3 She married Richard Gardiner Casey, Baron Casey, son of Richard Gardiner Casey and Evelyn Jane Harris, on 24 June 1926.¹ She died in 1983.¹
     From 24 June 1926, her married name became Casey.¹ After her marriage, Ethel Marie Sumner Ryan was styled as Baroness Casey on 16 May 1960.

     Maj.-Gen. Sir Charles Snodgrass Ryan was born on 20 September 1853 at Killeen Station, Longwood, Victoria, Australia.² He was the son of Charles Ryan and Marian Cotton.² He married Alice Alfrida Sumner, daughter of Theodotus John Sumner, on 5 July 1883 at Christ Church, Brunswick, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.² He died on 23 October 1926 at age 73.²
     He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.)³ He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)³ He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.)⁴ He graduated from Melbourne University, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, with a Bachelor of Medicine (M.B.)³ He graduated from University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, in 1875 with a Master of Surgery (C.M.)³ He was a surgeon between 1878 and 1913 at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia^G.¹ He was assistant director of medical services, 1st Division, Australian Imperial Force in 1914.⁴

     Richard Gardiner Casey was born in 1846.² He was the son of Dr. Cornelius Gavin Casey and Laetitia Gardiner.² He married Evelyn Jane Harris, daughter of George Harris, in 1888.¹ He died in 1919.²
