Sir John Cathcart, 2nd Bt. was the son of Sir Hugh Cathcart, 1st Bt. and unknown daughter Broun.1 He married, firstly, Katherine Dundas, daughter of Robert Dundas, Lord Arniston and Margaret Sinclair, on 6 July 1717.1 He married, secondly, Elizabeth Kennedy, daughter of Sir John Kennedy of Culzean, 2nd Bt. and Jean Douglas, on 30 May 1729.1 He died between September 1746 and 1765.1
He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Cathcart, of Carleton, co. Ayr [N.S., 1704] in March 1723.1
