Sir John Grant Lawson, 1st Bt. was born on 28 July 1856.2 He was the son of Andrew Sherlock Lawson and Isabella Grant.2 He married Sylvia Hunter, daughter of Charles E. Hunter, on 31 July 1902.2 He died on 27 May 1919 at age 62.2
He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)3 He was admitted to Inner Temple entitled to practise as a barrister-at-law.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for North Riding, Yorkshire, Thirsk and Malton Division between 1892 and 1906.3 He held the office of Parliamentary Charity Commissioner between 1895 and 1900.3 He held the office of Parliamentary Secretary of the Local Government Board between 1900 and 1905.3 He held the office of Deputy Speaker, House of Commons in 1905.3 He was created 1st Baronet Lawson, of Knavesmire Lodge, York [U.K.] on 26 December 1905.3
