Ruari Macdonald, 3rd of Clanranald and Moidart was the son of Allan Macdonald, 2nd of Clanranald and Moidart and unknown daughter Stewart.2 He married, firstly, Margaret Macdonald, daughter of Sir Donald 'Balloch' Macdonald and Johanna O'Neill.1 He married, secondly, Marion Mackintosh, daughter of William Mackintosh, Chief of Clan Chattan.1 He died in 1481.1
In 1431 he fought under Sir Donald Balloch of Isla in Lochaber when the latter defeated the King's army.1 In 1455 he unsuccessfully raided Sutherland.1 He also had several natural sons.1
