Dennis Henry Herbert, 1st Baron Hemingford was born on 25 February 1869.1 He was the son of Reverend Henry Herbert and Mary Ruddock.2 He married Mary Graeme Bell, daughter of Valentine Graeme Bell and Rebecca Filson, on 9 June 1902.1 He died on 10 December 1947 at age 78.1
He was educated at King's School, Ely, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Wadham College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1892 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was solicitor, with legal firms of Beaumont & Son and Clarke, Rawlins & Company in 1895.1 He graduated from Wadham College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1901 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He wrote the book The Law as to Solicitors.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Unionist) for Watford between 1918 and 1943.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Hertfordshire.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Hertfordshire.1 He was Temporary Chairman of Committees, House of Commons between 1924 and 1928.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) in 1929.1 He held the office of Deputy Speaker, House of Commons between September 1931 and 1943.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 26 June 1933.1 He was created 1st Baron Hemingford, of Watford, co. Herts [U.K.] on 1 February 1943.1 He was chairman of Equity and Law Life Assurance.1
