Lady Jemima Hope Johnstone was the daughter of James Hope Johnstone, 3rd Earl of Hopetoun and Lady Elizabeth Carnegie.1 She married Admiral Sir George Hope-Vere, son of Hon. Charles Hope-Vere and Helen Dunbar, in 1803.1 She died on 29 August 1808.1

He was given the name of James Hope at birth.1 His name was legally changed to James Hope Johnstone.1 He gained the rank of officer between 1758 and 1764 in the 3rd Foot Guards.3 He fought in the Battle of Minden in 1759.3 In 1781 he was appointed Curator Bonis (Trustee in Lunacy) for his great-half-uncle, 4th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount of Aithrie [S., 1703] on 12 February 1781.3 He succeeded as the 3rd Lord Hope [S., 1703] on 12 February 1781.3 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Hopetoun [S., 1703] on 12 February 1781.3 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1784 and 1790.1 He held the office of Hereditary Steward of Annandale and Hereditary Keeper of Lochmaben Palace.1 He succeeded as the 5th Lord Johnstone [S., 1662] on 29 April 1792, de jure.1 He succeeded as the 5th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell [S., 1662] on 29 April 1792, de jure.3 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1794 and 1796.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of County Linlithgowshire between 1794 and 1816.1 In 1795 he claimed the Annandale estates and titles, but no progress was made before his death.1 He held the office of Hereditary Sheriff of County Linlithgow.1 He was created 1st Baron Hopetoun of Hopetoun, co. Linlithgow [Scotland] on 3 February 1809, with special remainder to the heirs male of his father.3
