     James Calcraft Dudley Ryder was born on 19 May 1934.1 He is the son of Major Dudley Claud Douglas Ryder and Nancy Edith Baker.1 He married, firstly, Sarah Victoria Bircham, daughter of Michael Guy Bircham, on 9 July 1966.1 He and Sarah Victoria Bircham were divorced in 1979.1 He married, secondly, Georgina Susan Farnham, daughter of Edward George Adrian Farnham, in 1984.1
     He was educated at Sherborne School, Sherborne, Dorset, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the King's Own Royal Regiment.1 He lived in 2003 at Rempstone Hall, Corfe Castle, Dorset, EnglandG.1
