     Richard Burdon Haldane, 1st and last Viscount Haldane of Cloan was born on 30 July 1856 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He was the son of Robert Haldane and Mary Elizabeth Burdon-Sanderson.1 He died on 23 August 1928 at age 72, unmarried.1
     He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He graduated from University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG, in 1876 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was educated at Göttingen University, Göttingen, GermanyG.1 He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1879 entitled to practise as a Barrister-at-Law.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Haddington between 1885 and 1911.1 He was appointed Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) in 1890.1 He held the office of Bencher of Lincoln's Inn in 1893.1 He was Gifford Lecturer between 1902 and 1904 at St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, ScotlandG.1 He held the office of Secretary of State for War between 1905 and 1911.1 He held the office of Chancellor of the University of Bristol in 1911.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1911.1 On 27 March 1911 created.2 He was created 1st Viscount Haldane of Cloan, co.      Robert Haldane was born on 27 January 1805.2 He was the son of James Alexander Haldane and Mary Joass.3 He married, firstly, Jane Makgill, daughter of John Makgill of Kemback and Eliza Dalgleish, on 20 July 1841.2 He married, secondly, Mary Elizabeth Burdon-Sanderson, daughter of Richard Burdon-Sanderson and Elizabeth Sanderson, on 27 July 1853.2 He died on 12 June 1877 at age 72.2
     He was educated at Edinburgh High School, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.2 He was educated at Geneva, SwitzerlandG.2 He was a practising Writer to the Signet (W.S.)2 Circa 1852 he purchased Gleneagles.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Perthshire.2 He lived at Cloan, Auchterader, Perthshire, ScotlandG.2 He had another son by his second wife, who died in infancy.2
