Archibald Napier, 1st Lord Napier of Merchistoun was born circa 1575.1 He was the son of John Napier, 8th of Merchistoun and Elizabeth Stirling.2 He married Lady Margaret Graham, daughter of John Graham, 4th Earl of Montrose and Lady Margaret Ruthven, circa 15 April 1619.1 He died in November 1645.1
He was educated at Glasgow University, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.3 He held the office of Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to King James VI/I.3 He was appointed Knight in 1616.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1617.3 He held the office of Treasurer Depute [Scotland] between 1622 and 1631.3 He held the office of a Lord of Session between 1623 and 1626.3 He held the office of Lord Justice Clerk [Scotland] from 1623 to 1624.3 He held the office of Extra Lord of Session between 1626 and 1628.3 He was created 1st Baronet Napier, of Merchistoun [Nova Scotia] on 2 March 1627.3 He was created 1st Lord Napier of Merchistoun [Scotland] on 4 May 1627, with special remainer to his heirs male whatsoever.1 He was a Covenanter, although imprisoned by the Covenanters in 1641 and placed under house arrest until 1645 before 1638.3
