Sir John Carleton, 1st Bt. was the son of George Carleton and Elizabeth Brockett.1 He married Anne Hoghton, daughter of Sir Richard Hoghton, 1st Bt. and Catharine Gerard, in 1625.1 He died on 7 November 1637 at London, EnglandG.1 He was buried at Brightwell, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 His will (dated 21 September 1635 to 1 November 1637) was proven (by probate) on 24 November 1637.1 An inquest post mortem was held for his on 5 April 1638 at Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1
He graduated from Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, London, EnglandG, on 10 February 1609/10 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was created 1st Baronet Carleton, of Holcum, co. Oxford [England] on 28 May 1627.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cambridgeshire from 1628 to 1629.1 On 15 February 1631/32 he inherited the estate of Brightwell, Oxfordshire from his uncle, Dudley Carleton, 1st Viscount Dorchester.1 He held the office of Gentleman of the Privy Chamber in 1633.1 He held the office of Sheriff of Cambridgeshire from 1636 to 1637.1
