He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1901 and 1902.1 He was Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) in 1905.1 He gained the rank of Major in the Royal Artillery.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches. He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)1 He was awarded the Chevalier, Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur.1
