He was commissioned in 1875, in the service of the 1st Fifeshire Light Horse.1 He was commissioned in 1879, in the service of the Grenadier Guards.1 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Ross and Cromarty between 1884 and 1885.1 He was Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in 1886.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Leith Burghs between 1886 and 1914.1 He was Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs between 1892 and 1894.1 He held the office of Junior Lord of the Treasury between 1894 and 1895.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1910.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) in 1914.1 He held the office of Governor-General of Australia between 1914 and 1920.1 He was created 1st Viscount Novar, of Raith, co. Fife [U.K.] on 6 December 1920.1 On 6 December 1920 created (1st and last) Viscount Novar.3 He held the office of Secretary of State for Scotland between 1922 and 1924.1 He was chairman of the Political Honours Commitee in 1925.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1926.1 He held the office of Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of Fife in 1926.1 On his death, his title became extinct.1

Charles Harman Hunt was the son of Charles Henry Hunt.1 He married Joan Louise Burrell, daughter of Lt.-Col. Sir Merrik Raymond Burrell, 7th Bt. and Wilhelmina Louisa Winans, on 25 June 1947.1 He died in 1984.1

John Porter Porter was born on 3 April 1855.2 He was the son of Nicholas Montgomery Archdale and Adelaide Mary Porter.2 He married Josephine Henrietta Lloyd, daughter of Colonel Jesse Lloyd, on 31 January 1884.2 He died on 10 August 1939 at age 84.2
He was given the name of John Porter Archdale at birth.2 On 11 May 1876 his name was legally changed to John Porter Porter when he assumed the surname and arms of Porter only in lieu of his patronymic by Royal Licence.2 He held the office of High Sheriff of County Longford in 1879.2 He held the office of High Sheriff of County Fermanagh in 1883.2 He lived at Clonbalt, County Longford, IrelandG.1 He lived at Belle Isle, Lisbellaw, County Fermanagh, IrelandG.2
