He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1778 in the Royal Navy.1 He fought in the Battle of Ushant on 27 July 1778.1 He fought in the Battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1779.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1780.1 He fought in the Battle of Cape Henry on 5 September 1781.1 He fought in the Battle of Dominica on 12 April 1782, where he lost a leg.1

John Cecil, 4th Earl of Exeter was born in 1628.1 He was the son of David Cecil, 3rd Earl of Exeter and Lady Elizabeth Egerton.1 He married, firstly, Lady Frances Manners, daughter of John Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland and Hon. Frances Montagu, on 8 December 1646.1 He married, secondly, Lady Mary Fane, daughter of Mildmay Fane, 2nd Earl of Westmorland and Hon. Mary de Vere, on 24 January 1669/70.1 He died on 18 March 1677/78.1

Lady Elizabeth Manners was the daughter of John Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland and Hon. Frances Montagu.1 She married James Annesley, 2nd Earl of Anglesey, son of Arthur Annesley, 1st Earl of Anglesey and Elizabeth Altham, on 17 September 1669.2 She died on 7 December 1700, from breast cancer.1 She was buried on 10 December 1700 at St. James's, Westminster, London, EnglandG.3 Her will was proven (by probate) on 20 January 1700/1.3
Her married name became Annesley. After her marriage, Lady Elizabeth Manners was styled as Countess of Anglesey on 6 April 1686. Her last will was dated 10 February 1699/0.
