Lt.-Gen. Vernon Forbes Erskine Crum was born on 11 December 1918 at Calcutta, India.1,2 He was the son of Sir Walter Erskine Crum.1 He married Rosemary Dawson, daughter of Sir Douglas Frederick Rawdon Dawson and Aimée Evelyn Pirie, in 1948.1 He died on 17 March 1971 at age 52 at Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland, from a heart attack.1,2
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.2 He was educated at New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.2 He gained the rank of officer in 1940 in the Scots Guards.2 He fought in the Second World War.2 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1944.1 He was Conference Secretary to the Viceroy of India.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.) on 30 December 1947.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1962.2 He gained the rank of Brigadier in 1966.2 He was GOC of the Northern Ireland on 4 February 1971.2
