He was educated at Beaumont College, Old Windsor, Berkshire, England.2 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.2 He gained the rank of Temporary Major in the Royal Field Artillery.2 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)2 He was a practising solicitor in 1921.2 He was senior partner of Charles Russell & Company.2
