     He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)¹ He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.)¹ He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.)¹ He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.³ He was commissioned in 1923 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, in the service of the Grenadier Guards.³ He was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.)¹ He fought in the Second World War, in North Africa and Italy.³ He retired from the military, with the rank of Major-General, late of the Grenadier Guards.¹ He held the office of Governor of Bermuda between 1959 and 1964.^1,3

     Ralph Denne Newman was born on 4 March 1871.¹ He was the son of Thomas Holdsworth Newman and Elizabeth Laura Smith.² He married Mabel Blake, daughter of Frederick Blake, in December 1894 at Oporto, Portugal.¹ He died on 23 November 1896 at age 25, without issue.¹
