General Sir James Macdonell was the son of Duncan Macdonell, 14th of Glengarry and Marjory Grant.2 He died on 15 May 1857, unmarried.1
He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1794 in the 78th Regiment.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1795 in the 17th Light Dragoons.1 He gained the rank of Major in 1806 in the 78th Regiment.1 He fought in the Battle of Maida in 1806.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1811 in the Coldstream Guards.1 He fought in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, where he was distinguished in the defence of Hougoumont.1 He was Principal Equerry to Queen Adelaide.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1837.1 He was commander of the Brigade of Guards in Canada between 1838 and 1841.1 He gained the rank of General in 1854.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1855.1
