Murdoch Gillean Maclaine, 23rd of Lochbuie was born on 1 September 1845.1 He was the son of Donald Maclaine, 22nd of Lochbuie and Emilie Guillaumine Vincent.2 He married Katherine Marian Schwabe, daughter of Salis Schwabe and Ricke Rosetta Schwabe, on 17 June 1869.1 He died on 5 April 1909 at age 63.1
He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He was educated at The Priory, Croydon, London, England.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the 6th Royal Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers.)1 He gained the rank of Captain War 1870 in the 9th Argyll Artillery Volunteers.1 He was a military correspondent of The Times throughout the Franco-Prussian War between 1870 and 1871.1 He was awarded the Iron Cross in 1871 by the Kaiser.1 In 1871 founded the Argyll Gathering and Ball.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Argyllshire.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Argyllshire.1
