Sir Arthur John Grattan-Bellew was born on 23 May 1903.1 He was the son of Sir Henry Christopher Grattan-Bellew, 3rd Bt. and Lady Sophia Maria Elizabeth Forbes.2 He married Winifred Mary Mahony, daughter of Edmond Ronayne Mahony and Elizabeth Mary Comyn, on 22 July 1931.1 He died on 5 January 1985 at age 81.1,3
He was educated at Downside School, Bath, Somerset, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Christ's College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1924 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1925 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He was appointed Queen's Counsel (Q.C.)1 He gained the rank of officer in the 3rd/7th Dogra Regiment, Indian Army.1 He fought in the Second World War, where he became a POW 1942-45.1 He held the office of Attorney-General [Tanganyika].1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1956.1 He held the office of Chief Secretary of Tanganyika between 1956 and 1959.1 He was appointed Knight Bachelor in 1959.1
