Charles John Clay was born on 21 August 1828 at Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, EnglandG.1 He was the son of Henry Clay and Elizabeth Leigh.1 He married, firstly, Agnes Lucy Arden, daughter of Reverend Thomas Arden and Isabella Mary Cooper, on 6 July 1869 at Tatenhill, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, EnglandG.1 He married, secondly, Elizabeth Teasdale Smith, daughter of Mark Smith, on 6 September 1883.1 He died on 14 April 1910 at age 81 at Holly Bush, Newborough, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, EnglandG.1
