Sir Derrick Wellesley Gunston, 1st Bt. was born on 26 February 1891.1 He is the son of Major Bernard Hamilton Gunston and Ethel Caroline Jane Wellesley.2 He married Evelyn Bligh St. George, daughter of Howard Bligh St. George and Florence Evelyn Baker, on 18 October 1917.2
He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1913 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Reserve of Officers, Irish Guards.1 He fought in the First World War.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)1 He gained the rank of Major in the 7th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment (Territorial Army.)1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Thornbury between 1924 and 1945.1 He was created 1st Baronet Gunston, of Wickwar, co. Gloucester [U.K.] on 1 February 1938.1 He held the office of Joint Under-Secretary of War between 1940 and 1942.1 He was member of the Parliamentary Mission to Newfoundland in 1943.1
