     James Maitland-Heriot was born on 11 September 1774.¹ He was the son of Captain Hon. Frederick Lewis Maitland of Rankeillour and Margaret Dick.² He married Margaret Dalgleish, daughter of William Dalgleish and Jane Isabel Ogilvy, on 31 December 1813.¹ He died on 26 April 1848 at age 73.¹
