Sir James Cotter was the son of Edmond Cotter and Elizabeth Connell.2 He married, firstly, Mary Stapleton, daughter of Sir William Stapleton, 1st Bt..1 He married, secondly, Hon. Eleanora Plunkett, daughter of Matthew Plunkett, 7th Baron Louth and Jane Fitzgerald, on 30 July 1688.1 He died in 1705.1
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cork.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the Dragoons.1 He lived at Cotter's Lodge.2 He held the office of Governor of Cork.1 He lived at Anngrove, County Cork, IrelandG.1 He held the office of Ranger of the Royal Park of Shannon.1 He was Marshal and Secretary of certain West Indies Islands in 1676.1 He was Commander-in-Chief of the King James II's forces in Counties Cork, Limerick and Kerry.1
