John Wallace of Kelly and Neilstounside was the son of Thomas Wallace of Cairnhill and Lilias Cuninghame.2 He married, firstly, Ann Murdoch, daughter of John Murdoch, in 1753.3 He married, secondly, Jean Porterfield, daughter of John Porterfield of Fullwood, in April 1756.3 He married, thirdly, Janet Colquhoun, daughter of Robert Colquhoun, in September 1764.3 He died in 1805.3
