     Alexander Smith Kinnear, 1st and last Baron Kinnear was born on 3 November 1833.¹ He was the son of John Gardiner Kinnear and Mary Smith.¹ He died on 20 December 1917 at age 84, unmarried.¹
     He was educated at University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland^G.¹ He was educated at University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G.¹ He was admitted to Scottish Bar in 1856 entitled to practise as a Advocate.¹ He held the office of Senator of the College of Justice.¹ He was appointed Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) in 1881.¹ He was Dean of the Faculty of Advocates between 1881 and 1882.¹ He was styled as Lord Kinnear [Scottish Law Lord] in 1882.¹ He held the office of a Lord of Session [Scotland] between 1882 and 1913.¹ He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland^G, in 1894.¹ He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G.¹ He was created 1st Baron Kinnear, of Spurness, co. Orkney [U.K.] on 5 February 1897.¹ He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1911.¹ On his death, his title became extinct.¹
