Alexander Smith Kinnear, 1st and last Baron Kinnear was born on 3 November 1833.1 He was the son of John Gardiner Kinnear and Mary Smith.1 He died on 20 December 1917 at age 84, unmarried.1
He was educated at University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, ScotlandG.1 He was educated at University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He was admitted to Scottish Bar in 1856 entitled to practise as a Advocate.1 He held the office of Senator of the College of Justice.1 He was appointed Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) in 1881.1 He was Dean of the Faculty of Advocates between 1881 and 1882.1 He was styled as Lord Kinnear [Scottish Law Lord] in 1882.1 He held the office of a Lord of Session [Scotland] between 1882 and 1913.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, ScotlandG, in 1894.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He was created 1st Baron Kinnear, of Spurness, co. Orkney [U.K.] on 5 February 1897.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1911.1 On his death, his title became extinct.1
