Sir Thomas Carew, 1st Bt. was baptised on 21 June 1632 at Chudleigh, Devon, EnglandG.1,2 He was the son of Thomas Carew and Anne Clifford.3 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Carew, daughter of Sir Henry Carew and Dorothy Mohun, in 1650.1 He married, secondly, Martha Duck, daughter of Arthur Duck and Margaret Southworth, circa 20 June 1672.1 He died in September 1673 at age 41.1 His will was proven (by probate) on 2 January 1673/74.4
He was admitted to Middle Temple in 1649.2 He matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 12 November 1650.2 He graduated from Exeter College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 11 February 1652/53 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)2 He graduated from Exeter College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 28 June 1655 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Tiverton between 1661 and 1673.4 He was created 1st Baronet Carew, of Haccombe, co. Devon [England] on 2 August 1661.1 He lived at Haccombe, Devon, EnglandG.1 His last will was dated 13 September 1673.

Sir Henry Carew, 2nd Bt. was born in 1654.1 He was the son of Sir Thomas Carew, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth Carew.2 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Clifford, daughter of Thomas Clifford, 1st Baron Clifford of Chudleigh and Elizabeth Martin, on 8 April 1673.1 He married, secondly, Katharine Fownes, daughter of John Fownes, on 3 January 1683/84 at Highwick, EnglandG.3 He married, thirdly, Gratiana Darell, daughter of Thomas Darell, on 24 November 1686.1 He died between 15 September 1695 and 2 December 1695.1 His will was proven (by probate) on 2 December 1695.3

He matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 21 May 1647.5 He graduated from Exeter College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1650 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)5 He was admitted to Middle Temple entitled to practise as a Barrister.5 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Totnes between 1660 and 1672.4 He was appointed Knight.4 He fought in the Dutch Wars, where he fought in several naval battles.4 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1666.4 He held the office of Comptroller of the Household between 1666 and 1668.4 He held the office of a Commissioner of the Treasury between 1667 and 1772.4 He held the office of Treasurer of the Household between 1668 and 1672.4 In 1670 he was architect of the Treaty of Dover with France, including its secret clause by which King Charles was to declare himself a Roman Catholic.4 He was one of King Charles II's five-man clique of advisors known as the Cabal (his forming the ‘C.4') He held the office of Lord High Treasurer from 1672 to 1673, but forced to resign by the Test Act, which made public office impossible for Roman Catholics (of which he, unlike his master, had at least openly declared himself to be one.)4 He was created 1st Baron Clifford of Chudleigh, co. Devon [England] on 22 April 1672.4 His last will was dated 7 October 1673. He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.6
