James Callaghan was born in January 1877.1 He was the son of James Garoghan and Elizabeth Bernstein.2 He married Charlotte Gertrude Cundy, daughter of William Henry Cundy and Rosina McDowell, in 1903 at Portsmouth, Hampshire, EnglandG.1,3 He died in October 1921 at age 44.1
He was given the name of James Garoghan at birth.1 Circa 1895 his name was legally changed to James Callaghan which he adopted on joining the Royal Navy, in the hope that his parents would be unable to trace him.1 He gained the rank of Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy, and served aboard the royal yacht H.M.S. Victoria and Albert.1 He fought in the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916.1
