Arthur Quintal 2
Arthur Quintal was born on 6 May 1795 at Pitcairn IslandG.3 He was the son of Matthew Quintal and Tevarua (?)1 He married, firstly, Catherine McCoy, daughter of William McCoy and Teio (?), in 1816 at Pitcairn IslandG.1 He married, secondly, Mary Christian, daughter of Charles Christian and Sully (?), on 3 May 1835 at Pitcairn IslandG.1 He died on 19 November 1873 at age 78 at Norfolk IslandG.1
He held the office of Chief Magistrate of Pitcairn Island between 1840 and 1841.4
One day, Arthur and his best friend, Daniel McCoy, swam out to a rock a considerable distance from the shore, and there agreed to seek each one the other's sister for a wife. That place is now known as 'Tane M'A' (Place of the men's agreement).
This is the same Arthur Quintal who treated another sister, Jane, so harshly when she 'strayed from the path of virtue', that Jane left the island never to return.
When Captain Falgar was on the island in 1808, he was the 'Leader of the Pitcairn Band'. He sat on the ground before a large gourd, and with his toes, he worked a piece of musical wood (Porou) and he beat the gourd with two sticks held in his hands. Later, he was a strong opponent of Joshua Hill.5
