     Mary Dill was born on 17 March 1845.¹ She was the daughter of Robert Foster Dill and Catherine Haughton Rentoul.^1,2 She married Richard Dawson Bates on 11 April 1872.¹ She died on 1 May 1931 at age 86.¹
     From 11 April 1872, her married name became Bates.¹

     Robert Foster Dill was born on 17 April 1811.¹ He was the son of Reverend Samuel Dill and Hester Foster.² He married Catherine Haughton Rentoul, daughter of James Rentoul, on 5 February 1841.¹ He died on 20 July 1893 at age 82.¹
     He graduated from Glasgow University, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland^G, in 1834 with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)¹ He was Coroner of the City of Belfast in 1865.¹ He was registered as a Member, Royal College of Surgeons (M.R.C.S.)³ He was Professor of Midwifery in 1868 at Queen's College, Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland^G.¹

     John Bates was the son of Richard Dawson Bates and Mary Dill.¹ He died in 1874, without issue.¹

     Jessie Muriel Cleland was the daughter of Sir Charles John Cleland.¹ She married Sir Richard Dawson Bates, 1st Bt., son of Richard Dawson Bates and Mary Dill, on 8 April 1920.¹ She died on 31 October 1972.¹
     From 8 April 1920, her married name became Bates.¹

     Sir Charles John Cleland lived at Bonville, Maryhill, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland^G.¹ He was appointed Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.)¹ He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.)¹

     Mary Murray Hoult was the daughter of Lt.-Col. Joseph Murray Hoult.¹ She married Major Sir John Dawson Bates, 2nd Bt., son of Sir Richard Dawson Bates, 1st Bt. and Jessie Muriel Cleland, on 30 April 1953.¹ She died on 27 December 2016.²
     From 30 April 1953, her married name became Bates.¹ She lived in 2003 at 18 Peninsular Square, Winchester, Hampshire, England^G.¹

     Charles Joseph Dill Bates was born on 25 April 1959.¹ He is the son of Major Sir John Dawson Bates, 2nd Bt. and Mary Murray Hoult.¹ He married Suzanne C. Beaumont, daughter of David Beaumont, in 1984.¹

     Suzanne C. Beaumont is the daughter of David Beaumont.¹ She married Charles Joseph Dill Bates, son of Major Sir John Dawson Bates, 2nd Bt. and Mary Murray Hoult, in 1984.¹
     From 1984, her married name became Bates.¹
