James Barclay of Knockleith and Templeland was born on 28 November 1782.1 He was the son of Charles Barclay of Knockleith and Templeland and Bathia Smith.1 He was baptised on 1 December 1782 at Auchterless, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.2 He married Mary Anne Barclay, daughter of Reverend Peter Barclay and Margaret Duddingston, on 28 April 1823.1 He died on 18 March 1856 at age 73 at Knockleith, Auchterless, Aberdeenshire, ScotlandG.1

He gained the rank of Midshipman in the Royal Navy.1 He fought in the Battle of Trafalgar on 20 October 1805.1 He fought in the War of 1812, where he was Commodore of Lake Erie, and was dangerously wounded.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1824.1
