Sir James Douglas, 1st Lord of Dalkeith1

     Sir James Douglas, 1st Lord of Dalkeith was the son of Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith and Lady Agnes Dunbar.2 He and Lady Elizabeth Stewart obtained a marriage license on 10 November 1387.1 He married, secondly, Janet Borthwick, daughter of Sir William Borthwick, 2nd of Borthwick and Beatrice Sinclair, from 1411 to October 1439.3 He died between February 1440 and 22 May 1441.3
     He was created 1st Lord of Dalkeith [Scotland], although evidence for this creation is 'nugatory.1,2' On 24 March 1381/82 he had a charter of the territorial Barony of Morton in Nithsdale with Mordingtoun and Whittinghame.2 He was appointed Knight between September 1390 and January 1392.4

     William Douglas was born in 1390.2 He was the son of Sir James Douglas, 1st Lord of Dalkeith and Lady Elizabeth Stewart.2,1 He and Margaret Borthwick obtained a marriage license on 9 December 1420.1 He died in 1425, without issue.2

     James Douglas, 2nd Lord of Dalkeith was the son of Sir James Douglas, 1st Lord of Dalkeith and Lady Elizabeth Stewart.1 He married Elizabeth Gifford, daughter of James Gifford.1 He died between 1456 and 1458.1
     He succeeded as the 2nd Lord of Dalkeith.1 On 22 May 1441 he was declared incapable of managing his own affair, by Act of Parliament [Scottish].2 On 8 September 1456 he resigned his lands in favour of his son.3

     Elizabeth Gifford was the daughter of James Gifford.1 She married James Douglas, 2nd Lord of Dalkeith, son of Sir James Douglas, 1st Lord of Dalkeith and Lady Elizabeth Stewart.1 She died after 1456.1

James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton1

     James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton was the son of James Douglas, 2nd Lord of Dalkeith and Elizabeth Gifford.2 He married Joan Stewart, daughter of James I Stewart, King of Scotland and Lady Joan Beaufort, before 15 May 1459.2 He died between 22 June 1492 and 22 October 1492.3
     He was created 1st Earl of Morton [Scotland] on 14 March 1457/58.4 He was Envoy to France and Castile in 1491.3

     Henry Douglas of Dalkeith was the son of Sir James Douglas, 1st Lord of Dalkeith and Lady Elizabeth Stewart.1 He married Lady Margaret Douglas, daughter of James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas and Beatrice Sinclair.1 He died before 1456.1
     He had a charter from his father for Borg.2

     Lady Margaret Douglas was the daughter of Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Douglas and Lady Eupheme Graham.1 She married, firstly, William Douglas, 8th Earl of Douglas, son of James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas and Beatrice Sinclair, on 2 February 1449/50.2 She married, secondly, James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas, son of James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas and Beatrice Sinclair, after 26 February 1452/53.3 She and James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas were divorced circa 1455 when his attaintment made him an undesireable partner.3 She married, thirdly, John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl, son of Sir James Stewart of Lorn and Lady Joan Beaufort, in 1459/60.4 She died between January 1473 and 1475.5
     Lady Margaret Douglas also went by the nick-name of 'the Fair Maid of Galloway'.5 After her marriage, Lady Margaret Douglas was styled as Countess of Douglas on 2 February 1449/50. From between 1459 and 1460, her married name became Stewart. After her marriage, Lady Margaret Douglas was styled as Countess of Atholl in 1460.5
