He was given the name of John Rowlands at birth.1 He fought in the American Civil War between 1862 and 1863, first in the Confedrate Army, captured at Shiloh, and then in the Union Army.2 He emigrated to U.S.A. arriving on 1869.1 An African explorer, including finding Dr. Livingstone.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal Unionist) for Lambeth North between 1895 and 1900.2 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1899.1
