     He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was wounded.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)1 He was Aide-de-Camp to the Viceroy of India between 1919 and 1920.2
