Lt.-Col. Anthony Charles Richards was born in 1953.1 He is the son of Dudley Raymond Richards and Eleanor Caroline Otter.1 He married Serena Anne Spencer, daughter of Richard Peter Michael Spencer and Bettyne Ione Everard, in 1978.2
He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.3 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1973 in the 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards.3 He gained the rank of Major in 1985.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1994.3 He was Equerry to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh between 1994 and 1997.3 He was appointed Commander, Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) in 2003.3
