Horace James Powys was born on 7 March 1873.1 He was the son of Thomas Bancho Powys-Keck and Sarah Matilda Johnson.1 He married Edith Mary Cockburn Harvey, daughter of Alexander J. Harvey, on 18 October 1902.1 He died on 31 January 1952 at age 78.1
He was given the name of Horace James Powys-Keck at birth.1 He was educated at Malvern College, Malvern, Worcestershire, England.1 He was educated at Monkton Combe College, Bath, Somerset, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the 5th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps.1 He fought in the Boer War.1 He was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Newfoundland between 1900 and 1901.1 He fought in the First World War.1 In 1930 his name was legally changed to Horace James Powys.1
