Sir Charles Sykes, 1st Bt. was born on 31 December 1867.1 He was the son of Benjamin Sykes and Rachel Carter.2 He married Mary Newsome, daughter of Benjamin Newsome, on 1 September 1892.1 He died on 16 November 1950 at age 82.1
He was educated at National School, Kirkheaton, Yorkshire, England.1 He was chairman of John Crowther and Sons.1 He was Chairman of the Board of Control of Worsted Woollen Trade during the First World War.3 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) in 1918.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative Liberal) for Huddersfield between 1918 and 1922.1 He was created 1st Baronet Sykes, of Kingsknowes, co. Selkirk [U.K.] on 17 June 1921.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Huddersfield.1 He was awarded the Commander, Order of Leopold II of Belgium.1
