Hon. Alick Laidlaw Buchanan-Smith was born on 8 April 1932.1 He was the son of Alick Drummond Buchanan-Smith, Baron Balerno and Mary Kathleen Smith.2 He married Janet Delahoy Lawrie, daughter of Thomas Lawrie, on 17 August 1956.1 He died in 1991.1
He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1 He was educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond, Perthshire, Scotland.1 He graduated from Pembroke College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was educated at Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for North Angus and Mearns between 1964 and 1991.1 He held the office of Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Home Affairs and Agriculture between 1970 and 1974.1 He held the office of Minister of State, Agriculture Fisheries and Food between 1979 and 1983.1 He held the office of Minister of State, Department of Energy between 1983 and 1987.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1984.1

Janet Delahoy Lawrie is the daughter of Thomas Lawrie.2 She married Hon. Alick Laidlaw Buchanan-Smith, son of Alick Drummond Buchanan-Smith, Baron Balerno and Mary Kathleen Smith, on 17 August 1956.1
From 17 August 1956, her married name became Buchanan-Smith. She was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1993.1 She lived in 2003 at Cockeden, Cockburn, Balerno, Midlothian, Scotland.1
