     He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1916 in the Chinese Labour Corps.¹ He was a merchant.¹

     Joan Hartland married Robert St. Andrew St. John, son of Robert Newell St. John and Gertrude Brooke, on 17 July 1918.¹ She and Robert St. Andrew St. John were divorced in 1921.¹
