     James Duff Hewett was born in January 1891 at Kihikihi, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.1 He was the son of Robert Basil Duff Hewett and Anna Muriel Harrison.1 He married Amy Ethelinda Brown.1 He died on 27 October 1955 at age 64 at Kerikeri, New Zealand.1
     He was educated at Wanganui Collegiate School, Wanganui, New ZealandG.1 He fought in the First World War between 1915 and 1918, with the Royal Flying Corps.1 He was awarded the Croix de Guerre.1 He gained the rank of officer in 1924 in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.1
