He fought in the First World War, in the Royal Naval Air Service.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for East Fulham between 1933 and 1935.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Lambeth, Kennington Division between 1939 and 1945.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1945.1 He held the office of Minister of Supply between 1945 and 1947.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Deptford between 1945 and 1950.1 He was created 1st Baron Wilmot of Selmeston, co. Sussex [U.K.] on 30 January 1950.1 He was chairman of Illingworth Morris & Company Ltd.1
